Before we get into this week’s edition, two important notices!

1: Thanks for being part of the Building Momentum community! We’ve now crossed 500 folks and I’m eternally grateful for letting me occupy your inbox – drop me a reply and let me know how I can do better.

2: Alicia and I announced the Inclusivity Scholarship for our course, WTF is Go-To-Market? – please share with anyone you think could be a good fit, and help us improve representation in the community.

Life with, life without

I think it was Intercom who started the trend of life with, life without illustrations — and it quickly set the standard for every SaaS company.

Being able to represent the difference is a great way of evoking emotion through illustration. And even though the image above is a meme going around, you can instantly feel the stress and sadness of the ‘without’ side. There’s zero effort required – just instant synapses firing to connect the dots.

What could you convey through illustration for your product?

What product marketing is (and isn’t)

Product marketers CAN do all of those things, but honestly it’s a waste of our skills and we probably won’t stick it out for very long.

We’re best utilised to push forward strategic projects, not just manage a project. We’re not just copywriters, we’re there to build and design a narrative that works. Don’t ask us to just engage customers with campaigns, we’re gonna empathise, embody, and represent them.

Don’t waste the strategic excellence that PMMs can bring to your team.

An important read: how Monzo PMs drive momentum

1. Customer first. Company second. Squad third.

2. Separate belief and empirical fact

3. Form a theory of the world

4. Start small, think big

5. Find the leverage

6. Execute with alacrity against clear goals

7. Continually learn and evaluate performance
